Music
Experience in music is a valuable component of education. Such involvement contributes to students’ development in numerous ways.
Specialised and experienced itinerant music teachers deliver these lessons onsite.
We are lucky here at St Bernard’s College to have some of the best music tutors in the Wellington region.
The number of hours allocated to the school for instrumental tuition is roll related. These hours are supplemented to keep group numbers low and for this, a donation of $100 is charged during Term 1. Payment is arranged through the office.
Students are expected to take their lessons seriously with home practice, regular attendance and termly performance.
Attendance and progress are monitored with rolls and concerts throughout the year.
Parent’s will receive emails regarding their student’s performances wherever possible.
SBC Choir performs with the NZSO
Members of the SBC Choir performed in the first concert since lock-down IN THE WORLD alongside the NZSO in the Michael Fowler Centre at the end of Term 2. On the way, we managed a visit to the Weta Guitar Studio where we had a jam on too many electric guitars, a Samoan ukulele and a Russian balalaika.
The evening itself was pretty long, but take a look at the result on the video below with our students appearing from 2:09:17.
Weekly Music Rehearsal Schedule
Monday Lunchtime – Rock Orchestra
This group prepares a variety of repertoire for performance. Currently this includes music of Vivaldi, rock classics and a smattering of jazz. Currently required by the group are more brass and woodwind players. Our rhythm section is top-notch!
Tuesday Lunchtime – Guitar Ensemble
This group of guitarist work with our itinerant tutor, Cyde Clemett to prepare pieces for performance. Students who have had 2-3 years of instrument tuition with some note reading are best suited to join this group.
Tuesday Afterschool – Senior Student Rock Band, preparing for Smokefree Rockquest.
Wednesday Lunchtime – Choir
The SBC choir of 2020 are singing a number of songs in 2 and 3 parts; songs by Teeks, classics like Whakaria Mai, boy band hits, hymn and barbershop-ish arrangements! We have joined with other school choirs to prepare small concerts and contribute to school events where we can. All students are welcome.
